These become long weekends: Our Lady of Aparecida, All Souls' Day, Black Consciousness Day, Christmas, New Year's Day, Carnival and Good Friday. Tiradentes Day falls on a Wednesday and Corpus Christi on a Thursday, both good dates for taking a few extra days off and making it a long weekend.
Black Consciousness Day has been a national holiday since 2024, under Federal Law 14,759/2023. Carnival and Corpus Christi are optional days off (pontos facultativos) on the federal calendar, but Corpus Christi is a holiday in the city of São Paulo, as is the city's anniversary, which falls on a Monday, Jan 25, in 2027.
The federal ordinance (portaria) setting the 2027 holidays hasn't been issued yet. The movable dates are based on Easter, which falls on Mar 28, 2027: Carnival Tuesday comes 47 days before it, and Corpus Christi 60 days after.

What is New Year's Eve like in Maresias?
The São Sebastião city government hasn't announced the 2026/2027 New Year's Eve program yet (as of Oct 2, 2026). For the last two New Year's Eves, Maresias had a free public party with a DJ and low-noise fireworks, from 9 pm on the 31st to 2 am on the 1st. In 2025/2026, the local party was held at Praça Internacional do Surf.
According to the city government, hotel occupancy in São Sebastião over New Year's Eve 2025/2026 was 96%, the highest since 2018. Besides the free public party, Maresias has private New Year's Eve parties, with tickets sold separately.
On the sand, the city bans tents, camping, bonfires, and umbrellas or chairs used to save a spot. The fine for lighting a fire on the sand can reach R$ 100,000.
Villa Blu is on a quiet street, a 10-minute walk from the beach (700 m). On New Year's Eve, that means walking to see the fireworks and leaving your car in the parking space included in your rate. What is Carnival like in Maresias?
It fills up too. During Carnival 2026, hotel occupancy in São Sebastião was 87.7%, the highest in recent years, and the city government spread more than 130 acts across 18 venues around the city. As of Oct 2, 2026, the 2027 program had not been announced.

How do you avoid traffic on the way to Maresias?
From São Paulo, there are two main routes. One is the Rodovia dos Tamoios (SP-099), which connects São José dos Campos to Caraguatatuba, followed by the Rio-Santos highway (SP-055) to Maresias. The other is the Mogi-Bertioga highway (SP-098) to Bertioga, then the Rio-Santos to Maresias. Step-by-step directions are in our guide on how to get to Maresias.
Over the 2025/2026 year-end holidays, Concessionária Tamoios (the highway's operator) expected about 624,000 vehicles between Dec 23 and Jan 5 and suspended roadwork in the coastbound direction, but didn't publish peak times. For the 2026 Independence Day holiday, it predicted peaks on Friday from 4 pm and on Saturday from 6 am heading to the coast, and on Monday from 8 am on the way back. If you can, leave before then.
Rain matters too. In September 2026, the Serra Antiga, the old mountain section used for the descent, was closed due to heavy rain, and traffic was moved to the Serra Nova, the new section, under Operação Comboio (a convoy system), with alternating directions. How far in advance should you book a beach holiday?
We couldn't find any study on booking lead times in Maresias. The closest data is a survey by Omnibees (a hotel distribution technology company) published by Panrotas (a Brazilian travel trade news outlet) in March 2025. In 2024, the three destinations in Brazil with the longest booking lead times were beaches in the Northeast: 110 days in Ipojuca (Pernambuco), 107 in Maragogi (Alagoas) and 104 in Mata de São João (Bahia).
Those 104 to 110 days are annual averages for the Northeast, not for holidays in Maresias. Still, they're a useful yardstick: with 96% occupancy last New Year's Eve and 87.7% during Carnival 2026, leaving it to the last minute means risking not getting the room you want.
For New Year's Eve and Carnival, decide three to four months ahead. For the October and November holidays, book as soon as your dates are set.
